Set-top showdown: Apple TV 4K vs Google TV Streamer compared
gatorguy said:chasm said:One important difference left out of the compare (because it’s not in the spec sheet):The Google TV device will report back everything you do with it, and sell that specific information about you to marketers.Apple TV likely collect stats on what people are watching in aggregate, how long the device is in use and general stuff like that, but they won’t sell any personal info to marketers. but also play my music library superbly.
Neither will Google. You already knew they don't sell personal information, never have, but a little Wednesday FUD claiming they do can be fun, huh?
Of some note, both companies may share limited viewership data with Nielsen, like what you watch, when, for how long, etc., anonymized of course before shared, unless you choose otherwise. No idea if or where any "diagnostics" data, again anonymized, may be shared by the two.
Google isn't a saint when it comes to searching for profit avenues, so you making stuff up to ding 'em with seems more than a bit lazy on your part. Find one of the numerous things with at least a hint of truth next time. This one ain't it.
By the way, I love playing my Youtube music on my Sonos system via my current Chromecast. The spatial audio added to the new Google TV steamer will be a fine improvement. I understand why you'd love doing essentially the same via your AppleTV.- It uses data to build individual profiles with demographics and interests, then lets advertisers target groups of people based on those traits.
- It shares data with advertisers directly and asks them to bid on individual ads
Is this outdated? I think Google sells your information just not your specific personal information. -
