  • M3 MacBook Air review: The ideal Mac laptop for Intel hold-outs

    jcc90266 said:
I have the Early 2020 Intel i3 and am ready to make the upgrade. I use it for work, video editing and also DJ using Serato DJ Pro so some extra power will be welcome. Wondering anyone's thoughts on getting the M2 with upgraded RAM to 16gb or going with the M3 with the 8gb standard RAM.
I'd highly recommend not going with 8 GB. I thought that would be enough with the M1 Air model and I am constantly running out of memory and I only have four or five apps open at a time, granted I also like to have a lot of tabs open in Safari. My M1 Pro Max with 64 GB just screams and never seems to run out of memory.

  • Apple unveils 16-inch MacBook Pro with M1 Pro, M1 Max starting at $2499

It's actually a big let down in terms of laptop design. Why are we bringing back HDMI when USB4 provides the same technology? I am ok with the SD slot but not ok with Magsafe and the HDMI port.
So if someone walks past you and yanks out the power cord and your MacBook Pro with M1 Pro Max costing you $4,264.66 flys to the ground, you're okay with that? I welcome the return of Magsafe all the way, 1000%!

  • Reports are spreading about a very specific Apple Vision Pro front glass crack

    This is not good.

Overall, it reeks of being a rushed product,  notwithstanding the very good initial reviews.
I guess the new narrative is that Apple rushes everything  to the market even when no one has a clue on their production schedule.

  • Apple is just getting started with Apple Silicon

Apple's market penetration of the PC marketplace has been stuck under 10% for over 25 years. One way Apple tried to remedy this in the 1990s was to grant licenses to other companies to build Mac clones.
WIKIPEDIA: From early 1995 through mid-1997, it was possible to buy PowerPC-based clone computers running Mac OS, most notably from Power Computing and UMAX. However, by 1996 Apple executives were worried that high-end clones were cannibalizing sales of their own high-end computers, where profit margins were highest.[18]

A total of 33 companies made Mac clones, fully licensed. Apple could take this approach again if it wants to crack the 10% market penetration of MacOS. There's no need for anyone to ridicule me for suggesting this, as I'm already sure nobody will agree with me that Apple should try this again. However what's different this time around is that many countries are hassling Apple for not allowing competition on their devices, and if Apple licensed other manufacturers to build hardware clones and/or to replace the OS on Apple's devices, that would likely reduce the cries of "monopoly."

I think it's pretty clear Apple is not worried about cracking the 10%. Apple will never license its OS again. Again, it's clear Apple is all about quality and not quantity. They have very publicly stated that they take pride in developing everything in-house to bring the best Mac experience possible.

  • Apple's new diversity exec hails from Bank of America

Apple needs to stay away from this DEI nonsense and start employing people on merit, because as far as innovation and marketing is concerned, they are falling way down on the standards set by Steve Jobs!!!
While I have no doubts she will have a legitimate job, I am sure this is more of a marketing ploy than anything. When Apple gets accused of not having enough diversity, they can point to her and she can say some scripted hyperbole nonsense.

  • Workplace thriller 'Severance' returns to Apple TV+ in early 2025

I know there was a pandemic in play but damn. Hopefully, if there will be a seson three we won't have to wait this long for it.

  • Apple won't return TikTok to the App Store until it's sold to a U.S. buyer

    direktor said:
The move to acquire TikTok is reminiscent of eminent domain, or the process of the government acquiring private property for public use provided it fairly compensates the original owner. However, because the only requirement is that ByteDance divests to a U.S.-based owner, who would likely retain it as private property, it does not meet the criteria.

I’m sorry, what? What move to acquire TikTok? By who?

How did eminent domain become relevant in this discussion? This reads like a fever dream.
Rumor has it Elon Musk is looking to buy the company.

  • Trump's chip tariff threat takes aim at Apple's TSMC partnership

It all comes down to labor. Are American companies willing to bring mass manufacturing back to America? A typical Chinese Foxconn factory employs 100,000 to 200,000 workers and pays them roughly $2-3 an hour depending on overtime. While the base shift at Foxconn is usually 8 hours, overtime of 2-4 hours is common.

The average minimum wage in America is $7.50. Now with all these deportations happening, what American is willing to work at a factory, for 8-12 hours a day, making minimum wage to manufacture iPhones?

  • Tim Cook says Apple's DEI program may change in the future, but only if required by law

    netrox said:
What I don't get it is that DEI has nothing to do with Human Resources's hiring. It's about learning different viewpoints of different people from different cultures, embracing their diversity, and adding value to their services/products that will benefit minorities.

Don't you see, Trump cannot comprehend that so he has to get rid of it. Ignorance. Oh, and he's also racist. And a narcist.

  • WWDC will be on June 9 with iOS 19, Apple Intelligence updates, and more

I’m sure they are thrilled to introduce more new features we may or pay not get in the next 12 months.
This is why Apple needs to stop with the annual major releases. Instead, they should adopt the Google model where they update apps, minor and major releases at their own cadence. Stop focusing on the “must release in September” milestone, and introduce whatever they have ready whenever it is done.
They can still do their PR stuff to build anticipation for what is coming; just don’t add any dates.
Thing is, the iOS updates have always been tied to the new iPhone, and they have always shipped together for as long as I can remember. Several features of the latest and greatest iOS will only work on the new phones so it only makes sense that they are released at the same time.
